Aleksandra Wojtaszek is a PhD student at the Graduate School for Social Research, Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, Polish Academy of Sciences. Her doctoral research focuses on the urban situation and resilience of urban actors in Baghdad during and after the period of international sanctions, with a particular emphasis on how the city’s social and spatial structures evolved amidst changing conditions.
Before joining the doctoral school, Aleksandra worked in the NGO sector, implementing humanitarian and development projects in Poland and the Middle East, including Jordan, Lebanon, and Iraq. Among these, she worked on the EU-funded MASAR project that emphasized municipal strategic planning, the enhancement of public services, and local economic development in Ninawa and Dohuk governorates, Iraq. This work provided her with invaluable hands-on experience in addressing urban challenges in conflict-affected areas.
She holds a Master of Science in Arabic Studies from the University of Warsaw and a Bachelor’s degree in Oriental Philology from the Jagiellonian University. Her MSc thesis explored the urbanization processes in Jordan’s largest refugee camp for Syrian refugees, shedding light on the intersections of displacement and urban situation of the camp.
