Biographical Note

Dr Mudhaffar Al-Jabari is an Iraqi architect and urban planner. After completing primary school in Iraq and highschool in Egypt, Mudhaffar Al-Jabari started his academic path in 1959 by earning a scholarship from the Japanese government to study architecture in Tokyo, where he received his BSc and worked for the Shimizu Corporation. In 1966, he went to the US, where he worked in architectural offices to finance his study at the Illinois Institute of Technology. After receiving MSc in town planning, Mudhaffar Al-Jabari came back to Iraq in 1969/1970 and worked at the town planning department of the Ministry of Municipalities supervising the development of master plans for Mosul, Basra and Kirkuk that were commissioned to foreign companies. In the mid-1970s he transferred to the University of Baghdad and taught at the Center of Urban and Regional Planning established in 1971 to build Iraqi cadres in planning. While still at the Ministry, Mudhaffar Al-Jabari got in contact with the well-known Polish planner of the time, Professor Piotr Zaremba, who was involved in the regional planning of Baghdad and the two men kept in touch. Motivated by the extensive work carried out by Polish planners in Iraq, and the eruption of the Iran-Iraq War, Mudhaffar Al-Jabari obtained a scholarship from a University of Baghdad to complete his PhD at the Technical University in Szczecin under the supervision of Professor Zaremba. While back in Baghdad, Dr Al-Jabari continued teaching at the University of Baghdad, authored several books and articles on urban planning and worked as consultant for public institutions, including as head of the “Urban Development Project for Baghdad.”
