EURA 2026 Conference: CITIES UNDER STRAIN: Rethinking the ungovernable

  • Date:
  • Location: Università Iuav di Venezia

Between 17-20 June 2026, Aleksandra Wojtaszek participated in the EURA 2026 Conference: CITIES UNDER STRAIN: Rethinking the ungovernable. The conference gathered researchers from various academic disciplines, practitioners and policymakers to explore answers to the questions of How can cities and territories cope with instability, disorder, and radical uncertainty in an era of turbulence, when traditional dualisms (living/inanimate, human/non-human, nature/technology, reality/cognition, centre/periphery, urban/rural) are increasingly dismissed? How can they “ride” the uncontrollable and take advantage of being carried by it?. During the conference, Aleksandra presented a research paper “Isolated Projects: Crisis-Driven Housing Complexes and the Political Instrumentalism of Urban Development.” Based on research conducted in the framework of “Made in Iraq” project, the paper showed how urban governance under prolonged, and overlapping crises
produces housing projects whose functions, meanings, and institutional arrangements continue to evolve through subsequent political and economic disorders.
