Archival research at the Hoover Institution

The team conducted archival research at the Hoover Institution from 9 to 20 March 2025 to collect materials for planned publications. The primary focus was the Hiẓb al-Baʿth al-ʿArabī al-Ishtirākī Records (Baʿath Arab Socialist Party of Iraq). More than ten million digitized page images and 1,500 video files, collected by the Mu’assasat al-dhākirah al-’Irāqīyah from the Baʿth Regional Command headquarters and other sources, are housed in the Hoover Archives. This extensive collection of digital files sheds light on political conditions in, and the governance of, Iraq during Saddam Hussein’s regime.

The documents are accessed on computers in the reading room. The team used search terms aligned with the project’s objectives; photography was not permitted.

Moreover, the team also consulted the Conflict Records Research Center (CRRC) and the papers of Kanan Makiya.
